Decluttering Made Simple: 3 Things You Can Do Today

Decluttering is often sold as a quick reset. Clear the clutter, clear your mind, feel instantly lighter.

In reality, it’s rarely that simple.

For many people, decluttering is tied too much bigger moments: preparing for a move, downsizing a long-time home, or adjusting to a new stage of life. Those situations can bring emotion, decision fatigue, and stress into what seems like a “simple” task.

Whether you’re facing a larger transition or just looking to start the new year with a bit more breathing room, here are three decluttering steps you can do today that don’t require hours of energy or a major plan.

1. Reset your most visible surfaces

Instead of tackling an entire room, start with the places your eyes land first.

Kitchen counters, bathroom vanities, bedside tables, and coffee tables tend to collect everyday clutter quickly. Clearing these surfaces creates an immediate sense of calm and makes your home feel more spacious, even if nothing else changes yet.

If items temporarily land in a drawer or basket, that’s okay. The goal today is visual relief, not perfection.

2. Give yourself permission to release unused gifts

After the holidays, it’s common to find yourself with items you don’t need, love, or have space for. Letting go of gifts can feel uncomfortable, but releasing an item doesn’t erase the thought or care behind it.

If something doesn’t fit your lifestyle or home, donating or passing it along allows it to be useful elsewhere. The generosity behind the gift remains, even if the item doesn’t stay with you.

Decluttering is not about guilt. It’s about alignment.

3. Try the “use-it-or-lose-it” marker method

This approach works especially well for kitchens, offices, or utility spaces.

Place a small piece of tape or removable label on tools, gadgets, or supplies you’re unsure about. Set a reminder for four to six weeks from now. When you use an item, remove the marker.

When the time is up, anything still marked is likely something you don’t truly need. No debating required.
